It is a massive help for Newcastle fans, that one of their own, Alan Shearer, is in a position to make his voice heard.

Whilst some media try to dismiss supporter protests, when it is a fan such as the legendary number nine, it is far more difficult to ignore.

Like the rest of us, Alan Shearer can’t believe this transfer window.

Newcastle fans thought that surely this summer would be a major leap forward, Rafa Benitez to be allowed the transfer funds he both needs and deserves.

Instead, Mike Ashley is sitting there having watched on as the club generates between £25m and £30m in terms of net profit on deals in and out.

Alan Shearer asking on behalf of the rest of us: ‘My question would be, where’s that money gone?’

Referring to how Rafa Benitez has been treated by the club’s owner he says ‘Copy and paste isn’t it. I said exactly the same last year.’

Shearer warns that after 11 years and counting of Mike Ashley: ‘It’s quite obvious that is not going to change under this owner.’

BBC 5 Live Sport:

Steve Crossman (presenter):

‘I remember Rafa Benitez being here a year ago and saying “Well I haven’t had the reinforcements that I would like.”

Alan Shearer:

“Copy and paste isn’t it.

“I said exactly the same last year.

“I’ll probably be saying exactly the same next year.

“It was said two years ago, three years ago.

“Whoever goes in (to Newcastle) seems to be having the same problems and it’s quite obvious that is not going to change under this owner.

“Rafa has made a profit again as we stand here, of about £25m in this transfer market.

“What was it, about £120m for finishing tenth last season.

“My question would be, where’s that money gone?

“Nobody seems to know.

“That’s why when you hear Rafa speak, that’s why when you hear the vast majority of the fans speak, it’s because they are frustrated.

“They want hope.

“They want Newcastle to progress.

“When you look at it from Mike Ashley’s point of view, he’ll be sat back and rubbing his hand together.

“The fans want to see their money invested.

“The fans want to see new players coming in.”
