Newcastle fans in amazing u-turn on whether can avoid relegation – Poll results

On 8 February 2018 we asked Newcastle fans a number of questions.

This was in the lead up to the Man Utd match, with (Newcastle) United having just picked up three points from their last four Premier League matches.

A defeat to Man City and draws in what looked winnable matches, home to Swansea and Burnley, as well as away at Palace.

These results meant that Newcastle were in the relegation zone heading into that game against Jose Mourinho’s team.

To capture the mood of the Newcastle fans at that point, we got the following feedback from the thousands of supporters who responded:

Who will own Newcastle United in September?

76% Mike Ashley

24% New owner(s)

Who will be managing Newcastle United in September?

29% Rafa Benitez

71% New Manager

Which division will Newcastle United be in come September?

36% Premier League

64% Championship

In the aftermath of the victory over Manchester United, yesterday (Tuesday) we ignored those first two questions this time, but we asked once again:

Will Newcastle United avoid relegation this season?

With 11 matches to go, the Magpies are now 13th in the table but still only two points above the drop zone.

So what did Newcastle fans now think?

Well you couldn’t get a more dramatic turnaround after only 90 minutes of football, the latest poll showing supporters now going with:

83% Yes Newcastle will avoid relegation

17% No Newcastle will be relegated

Basically, it broadly means that 47% of Newcastle fans voting have been convinced enough by the win over Man Utd to now change their minds (that is unless you believe some Newcastle fans who originally thought we were staying up, now thought the win over Man U now made it MOREĀ  likely NUFC would go down..).

The change being that before Man U, 36% of Newcastle fans thought we’d survive, now that figure has risen to 83%.

It is volatile times of course and if we’d seen the expected defeat to Man U then it would have been grim.

Bournemouth is a massive match, especially with away games at Liverpool and Spurs currently scheduled amongst the three matches that follow.

For me, a win at Bournemouth and we are overwhelming favourites to stay up, a draw and we are kept ticking along, but a defeat and we are right bang back in the thick of it.

Six away matches and five at home to go, will NUFC be able to add enough points to their current total of 28?

The remaining games see Newcastle up against eight of the clubs in the top eleven in the table, as well as a trio of home matches against three of the bottom four (West Brom, Huddersfield and Southampton).

Hopefully we all look back at that win over Manchester United as a key point for both survival this season and longer-term revival.
